Where you can drive

Gravel-road approved. Unlimited miles. Winter-equipped.

The national rental chains forbid driving on unpaved roads. That rules out the Dalton, the Denali Highway, the McCarthy Road, the Steese, the Taylor and the Elliott — which is to say most of the reason people come to Alaska. Visitors usually discover this after they land.

This page says exactly where our vehicles may go. Whatever it says, the rental agreement says in the same words.

The Whittier tunnel

One lane, shared with the railway, tolled and timed. Check the schedule before you drive out there — you can wait half an hour for your direction.
